Got some questions around the exciting gym refurbishments? We’ve put together some answer to questions we thought you might have.
When are the gym refurbishments happening?
The Castle Leisure Centre and Southwark Park Sports and Athletics Centre is due to start on the 17 October 2024 with the others to follow. We aim to complete all centres by the end of December. Please see here for the full schedule
How long will the gyms be shut for?
Our aim is to keep the closures to a minimum in order to avoid disruption. The gyms will be closed for up to four weeks. You will still be able to swim and attend classes during that time plus members can use gyms at all other centres for no extra charge.
Are all gyms being done at the same time?
We will stagger the timings so not all gyms will be closed all at once. You can see the full schedule here.
Can I use another Southwark Leisure gym?
Yes, whilst your gym is closed we will give you access to all Southwark Leisure centres that are open to keep you moving.
Will I be refunded for the closure period?
You will have access to other Southwark Leisure gyms in the area as well as the full class and swim programme therefore there will be no refunds.
Our refund policy Cancellations and Refunds Policy – Leisure Facilities in Southwark (southwarkleisure.co.uk) states that “No refund of membership fees will be made if a facility or an activity is withdrawn from the centres programme.”
Can I cancel my membership?
Yes you can cancel your membership in accordance with the cancellation policy. If you re-join you will be charged a joining fee
Why can't I freeze my membership?
Our terms and conditions state that you can only freeze your membership as a result of injury or illness. Please visit www.southwarkleisure.co.uk/legal-policies/terms-and-conditions/ for our freeze policy.
We understand that the gym refurbishments may cause some inconvenience, but we continue to offer a range of services at the Centre that you can enjoy during this time. While the gym is being upgraded, the leisure centre remains open for other activities, including swimming and group exercise classes. Additionally, as a member, you have access to another Southwark Leisure gym nearby at no extra charge, so you can still keep up with your workouts.
We hope you take advantage of these options while we work on improving the gym for your future use.
What improvements can I expect to see in the gym?
We are getting brand new equipment, new layouts and decoration and a dedicated member area with a body composition analysis machine to help you track your progress. Southwark Council have invested significantly in this exciting project and we'll soon boast one of the best gyms in the area.
Can we make some recommendations for the changes?
We are unable to make any changes at this stage of the project, members were invited to consultation meetings at the beginning of the process and the ideas were considered during the design phase.
Will the prices go up as a result of the refurbishments?
As standard annual council practice we will be reviewing our membership in line with the current economic conditions and to ensure we can continue providing excellent facilities and services.
We understand the importance of providing affordable options for our community, and we strive to maintain a balance between quality and accessibility. Our aim is to continue being competitively priced compared to local alternatives. We regularly assess the market to ensure that our rates remain fair and in line with the value we provide.
Our price review will be completed by the end of February.
