Southwark Leisure is supporting National Fitness Day (NFD) to help highlight the positive impact that keeping active can have on your physical and mental health.
To encourage more people to get active, we’re hosting a week of free activities for local residents between 18 – 24 September.
Come and join us for some fun activities and challenges, check your health, try out our facilities and speak to our friendly team for advice on how to get started.

Free Swim and Gym
Dates: Wednesday 20 September between 8am – closing, Friday 22 September 6:30am – 10pm and Saturday 23 September 2pm to 5.30pm and Sunday 24 September 2pm to 9pm (subject to programmes and timetables).

Enjoy a free swim and gym session across our leisure centres. You must book your session in advance. Simply register for a Free Swim and Gym membership using the join online button.
Aqua Aerobics Taster class
Date and time: Tuesday 19 September: 7pm – 8pm (women only) and Wednesday 20 September: 3pm – 5pm (mixed gender)
Location: Camberwell Leisure Centre
Cost: Free
Come and get active in this fun group class in the swimming pool suitable for all fitness levels (open to members and non members). Includes exercises to get your heart pumping, such as jogging, leg kicks, body twists, arm stretches and other dance like movements. There will be optional use of water weights. Must be confident in the water to take part.

Personal Training taster session

Interested in Personal Training but not sure what to expect? Here’s a great opportunity to book a session with a trainer. You’ll get to train 1-2-1 with a Personal Trainer who will advise what exercises suit your goals. Training with a Personal Trainer can help you achieve your goals quicker so it’s a great opportunity for you to try it at a discounted price.

Cost: Free
Come and pop in for a tour of your local leisure centre. You can discover what activities are available and the different membership or pay-as-you-go options to suit you. You can even sign up on a Free Swim and Gym membership whilst you’re there. The fitness team will be ready with advice on how to get started. No booking required simply turn up on the day.
Posture MOT session
Date and time: Wednesday 20 September, half hour sessions available between 8am – 1pm (must be booked).
Participating centre: Dulwich Leisure Centre
Cost: Free
Each session is 30 minutes and you will learn all about how to use your body whilst moving. It will focus on breath, posture and technique. These are group sessions for up to four people. We advise you to wear normal comfortable gym clothes.
Sessions must be booked in advance and spaces will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

Technique Master Classes
Rowing Master Class: Tuesday 19 September, 12pm – 12:30pm – (only 3 spaces available)
Participating centre: Dulwich Leisure Centre
Cost: Free
This 30 min class will teach you the correct way to row & learn the benefits of using the rower and all its different programmes, which will to help you enhance your gym workouts even more.
Power Lifting Master Class: Thursday 21 September, 5:30pm – 6pm (4 spaces available)
Learn how to generate the maximum amount of muscular force for the given movement. As in the sport of Olympic weightlifting, it involves attempting a maximum weight single-lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates.
Sessions must be booked in advance and spaces will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

Free self-service health checks
Participating centres: The Castle Leisure Centre and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre
Cost: Free
Visit our self-service health kiosks to check your health in less than 5 minutes. Measure your blood pressure, heart rate, body fat, height, weight, body mass and stress. Kiosks are available in the centre foyer and residents are welcome to use it at any time. You do not need to be a member and no booking is required.

Yoga for Menopause
Learn about your menopause as you move
Participating Centre: Dulwich Leisure Centre
Date and time: 20 September at 2:15pm
This 60 minute session will take you through the key target areas: Stress, anxiety, management via breath and boosting metabolism to maintain healthy body weight, bone and muscle strength for bone health and maintaining muscle mass, pelvic floor strengthening and release.
All levels of ability welcome and is useful for peri and post menopause.

Location: Outside Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre
Date: 20 September, between 12pm – 4pm
Southwark health promotion van aims to help you look after you and your family’s health on vaccines, diabetes, blood pressure, healthy weight, smoking, alcohol, mental health, cancer screening and more. Visiting the health promotion van you’ll be able to:
- speak to health professionals about your own wellbeing
- get your blood pressure and weight checked, get advice on smoking and alcohol, and support for your mental wellbeing
- find out about preventing, and managing long-term conditions such as diabetes
- get advice on local screening for breast, bowel, cervical, lung and prostate cancer
- find out about local services that can help you, including leisure centres and cost of living advice
Community run and walk from Dulwich Leisure Centre
Beginner’s run with Adrian (3-5 kilometres): Monday 18 September at 10am (8 spaces available)
Mum’s Buggy Walk: 22 September 9:30am (a brisk stroll for mums and babies / toddlers in buggies – 6 spaces available)
Cost: Free
Enjoy getting active outdoors with us for a run or walk around the neighbourhood. Please arrive 10 minutes before the start of the session. Spaces are limited and will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis.
Southwark 5km Park Run
Date: Every Saturday at 9am
Where: Southwark Park, just off Lower Road in Rotherhithe in the borough of Southwark, SE16, London.
Walk, jog or run, you go at your own pace. Join in this fun community run that has brought people together through keeping active.
