Healthy Habits - Keeping Active in Cold Weather

We understand it can be tough to get motivated to leave the house to exercise during colder weather days, so here's our top tips for exercising in cold weather for the upcoming chilly months.

❄️ If the weather is very wet, cold and rainy, stay safe by exercising indoors (in one of our cozy Southwark Leisure centres!)
❄️ Warm up thoroughly before your workout
❄️ Dress appropriately for the weather with warm socks, gloves and a hat. Wear grippy shoes if there's ice outside..
❄️ Work your way slowly into the exercises and start with lower loads or intensity

If you have any pre-existing health conditions, make sure you talk to your doctor before exercising in cold weather.

Gym refurbishments are starting tomorrow, 17 October at the Castle Leisure Centre and Southwark Park Sports and Athletics Centre.
We know, we know… we said Spring 🌸, then June 🌞, and now it’s October 🍂. Let’s just say we’ve been working on our patience skills alongside yours 😅. But the wait is OVER! 🎉

🎥 5 Powerful Lower Body Exercises 💥 | Workout Wednesday with Lucian

Get ready to fire up those legs with this lower body workout! Here are 5 exercises that will strengthen your quads, hamstrings, and glutes. Let’s break them down with technique, sets, and reps:

1. Barbell Back Squat: Keep your chest up, sit back into your heels, and squat down until your thighs are parallel to the floor, then drive back up.

✅ 4 sets of 8-10 reps.

2. Romanian Deadlifts: With a slight bend in your knees, hinge at the hips, lowering the barbell while keeping your back flat, then return to standing by squeezing your glutes.

✅ 4 sets of 10-12 reps.

3. Walking Lunges with Kettlebells: Hold kettlebells by your sides, step forward into a lunge, keeping your knee aligned with your ankle, and alternate legs as you move forward.

✅ 3 sets of 12 steps per leg.

4. Leg Press: Keep your feet shoulder-width apart, press through your heels to extend your legs, and control the weight back down without locking your knees.

✅ 3 sets of 10-12 reps.

5. Leg Extension: Sit in the machine, extend your legs fully while contracting your quads, then lower the weight slowly.

✅ 3 sets of 12-15 reps.

With the weather getting colder and coughs and sniffles starting to emerge, it's important to make sure your immune system is taken care of in order to prevent sickness in yourself and others.

Here's our top tips for taking care of your immune system.

🌙 Get enough sleep - this gives your immune system time to fight illnesses while resting
🥕 Eat more plant foods - these contain antioxidants and vitamins which decrease inflammation and boost immunity
🚴 Regular exercise - moderate exercise may reduce inflammation and help your immune cells regenerate
💦 Stay hydrated - dehydration can increase your susceptibility to illness, and hydration benefits your health overall
🧘 Manage stress - stress is known to have a significant impact on overall health, so managing stress can help to keep you well

Make sure you take good care of yourself during the colder months, and always talk to a doctor if you need further advice on your health.

🎥 6 Essential Upper Body Exercises 💪 | Workout Wednesday with Lucian

Boost your upper body strength with this killer routine! Here are 6 exercises to target your shoulders, back, arms, and more. Let’s break them down with technique, sets, and reps:

1. *Seated Dumbbell Shoulder Press*: Sit with your back supported, press the dumbbells overhead, and control the weight on the way down.
- 3 sets of 10-12 reps.

2. *Cable Rows*: Sit upright, pull the cable towards your midsection while squeezing your shoulder blades together, and return with control.
- 3 sets of 10-12 reps.

3. *Cable Triceps Pushdowns (Straight Bar)*: Keep your elbows close to your body, push the bar down while contracting your triceps, and slowly return.
- 3 sets of 12-15 reps.

4. *Barbell Upright Rows*: Grip the barbell with hands shoulder-width apart, lift it up towards your chin while keeping elbows high, and lower with control.
- 3 sets of 10-12 reps.

5. *Underhand Lat Pull Down*: Grip the bar with palms facing you, pull down to your chest while engaging your lats, and control the return.
